The Super Bowl is renowned for its television ads. It’s one of the few times people actually sit down in front of the TV in anticipation of the ads. For some of the country’s biggest corporations, those million dollar ad spots become a battleground that can reap huge benefits in buzz the following days.
The holidays are a crazy time for everyone, and we’re no exception. The Acceleration Partners team spent the month giving back to their local communities and spending some much-needed R&R with family and loved ones. But we still found time to gather at the company headquarters in Boston for our annual holiday meeting.
Recently the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) sent letters of warning to sixty companies that made improper disclosures in print and TV ads, including twenty of the largest advertisers in the country. The action, dubbed Operation Full Disclosure, singled out ads featuring disclosures that were hard to find, misleading, or lacking in important information.

Affiliate marketing is changing. For years it was dominated by expensive programs that did little more than cannibalize existing customers brought in by other channels. Marketing managers have come to realize these programs are so full of fraud and off-brand promotion they often end up doing more harm than good.

It’s inner workings are mysterious to most marketers and in many companies it’s not treated with the same seriousness as other channels. Back in the good ol’ days, when search engines still resembled the Wild West and Google was not yet one of the largest companies in the world, SEO was as simple as picking the right keyword and adding it to a page many, many times. Throw in a couple of spammy links you bought from a farm somewhere in the Third World and your site was good to go.
