In The Checklist Manifesto, Atul Gawande asserts that the simple checklist is the key to taming a high-tech economy. Malcolm Gladwell in his review of the manifesto says, “…he [Gwande] is really interested in a problem that afflicts virtually every aspect of the modern world–and that is how professionals deal with the increasing complexity of their responsibilities.
You just can’t argue with the statistics. We are firmly entrenched in the age of video marketing and you ignore it at your peril. Social video generates 1200% more shares than text and images combined. (Wordstream) If you want more eyeballs on your content a.k.a your business, then you need to promote your blog posts with video.
Life doesn’t always go as planned or expected. I’ve been running (actually “wogging”) since 2007. I’ve had my share of trips and aches and sprains, but never any serious injuries. The worst physical injury I’ve ever experienced was a torn ACL in my right knee in 2013 that happened as I was attempting to get out of a boat on Lago de Sandoval in the Peruvian Amazon.
What’s stopping you from experimenting with live video for your business? I’ve been asking this question on various networks. It puzzles me that more people aren’t jumping onto the live video bandwagon. It’s never been easier to shoot and stream video. The only equipment required is your smartphone.
Have you ever published a blog post or status update, or video and then realized it was terrible? Maybe not the content, but the format or presentation of the content? What do you do? How do you handle it? In the case of live video, on Facebook, for example, you may not know the video sucked until after the fact. Like the video below. I’m sharing with you to share a lesson and a point.
Do you ever feel like you’re listening to a broken record when you are getting advice about social media marketing? How often have you heard and read that video is what you should be doing? Or, how important video is for connecting with your audience and that Facebook Live videos are the best way to get better visibility and reach on your Facebook page? Well, sometimes, the record isn’t broken.
There are over 3,000,000 blog posts published every single day. Think about that. If you’re a blogger then you know how time-consuming it is to promote your blog posts to your social networks. Yet, you also know that it’s the best way to get more eyeballs on your message, build your audience, and make sales.
Social media marketing (a subset of digital marketing) is evolving at breakneck speed. When I started marketing on the web in 1996, hardly anyone had a website, much less an email address. Marketing on the web was referred to as “Internet marketing” then “online marketing.” Now we are more specific and refer to “digital marketing” and “social media marketing” as strategies, t ...
As I was contemplating the year to come, I wrote in my notes that I wanted to listen more to the people in my various online communities. I was thinking about the content I want to create (blog posts, videos, ebooks) as well as programs to offer in the next 6-12 months. Now, I could just create what I THINK you want to know what I think you SHOULD know. Or I could ask you.
How often do you get a hair cut? Or, if that doesn’t apply to you, how often do you change the oil in your car? If you want to look sharp and well-groomed, you may get your hair cut every 5 or 6 weeks like I do (I have short, fine, straight hair that looks sloppy if I don’t get it cut every month).
What’s the average number of shares your blog posts typically get? Are you frustrated that your blog posts aren’t getting shared very much? You may be making a few common mistakes with your social share buttons that can be fixed in minutes! Let me explain. Last week I hosted Brag About Your Blog Day on my Facebook Page.
Last year I read an article somewhere (forgot to keep a link) by a woman who tracked all the books she read during the year. If I recall correctly, she had read 165 books in 2015! That’s astounding. And, it inspired me to start a spreadsheet to track the books I read in 2016. I’ve come nowhere close to 165 books… more like 52. My reading list is eclectic. From police thrillers to memoirs.
Whether you call them “text images” or “text pictures” or “image quotes,” using images with text is a content marketing trend that’s not going away anytime soon. You’ve probably noticed a lot of bloggers use text images to promote their content, particularly blog posts. I also recommend doing that, as I suggested when I published the Online Visibility Challenge (ongoing, take ...
On November 26, I’m celebrating and supporting Small Business Saturday® and all the small biz owners I know, love and work with! It’s a special day created so communities can show their love for small businesses both “brick and mortar” and virtual, like mine and most of my clients. And it wouldn’t be a celebration without people like you joining us! So mark your calendar for N ...

As I remind my clients from time to time, especially when they’re feeling overwhelmed with social marketing, if your business cannot be found online, then it’s like you’re invisible. And if you’re invisible, then your potential clients, the people you want to serve, will find someone else to work with, because there’s plenty of competition out there.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve had the privilege of working with several authors to build their audience and launch their first books. While each author’s book has done well, one client’s success stands out. On the one-year anniversary of her book’s publication, I asked Lisa Douthit if she would be willing to share what she did to achieve bestseller status with Wellness W ...
Do you test your social media content? Do you know which types of content get the best results? You’d think after 20 years of marketing my business online, it would be second nature for me, but, I confess…my testing is sporadic. Sporadic testing gives imperfect results and makes it difficult to make smart decisions.
When I was 19, I traveled for six months in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Everything I needed fit in my backpack and I was carefree. My plans changed on a whim and my final journey didn’t resemble the one I had planned before I left Southern California. I had one commitment: to send a postcard to my parents every single week letting them know where I was and that I was okay. Done.
Contrary to what you may think, you don’t need to be a podcaster to use audio in your digital marketing. While podcasting is an awesome way to build and connect with an audience, it takes a lot of commitment creating a show. From concept to equipment, to promotion and managing guests, you’ve got to be all in if you want to make a dent on the iTunes charts and attract a loyal audience.
