    • Nobody Reads Your Corporate Blog Because It’s Boring

In learning how to build my own news platform, I’ve taken a renewed interest in reading through lots and lots of blog posts every day, searching for trends and interesting perspectives different than mine. In that process, I’ve come to realize something. Nobody Reads Your Corporate Blog Because It’s Boring I’m not the first to say this. It’s been said for years.

    • When You Feel Stuck

When you make your own game in life and business, there’s a tight pairing between an opportunity and a problem and it has one word: freedom. When you can do anything, sometimes you lock up and do nothing. Or nothing useful. What should you do when you feel stuck? That Stuck Feeling When faced with freedom, we tend to get into a mental traffic jam. “What should I do?” “There’s so much.

  • Your Customers Don’t Want You To Act Like a Robot

There’s a dark side and a beautiful future built around every new tool and technology that comes along. For all the brilliance of marketing automation, artificial intelligence, and chatbots, there are all kinds of ways to use these tools to alienate and upset your customers, as well. As with all pursuits, we have to look at the intent of your execution and make sure you’re no ...

  • Watching and Listening are the New Reading

I asked 353,000-ish people which blogs they’re reading lately. The answer: almost none. Most replies came like this: I watch YouTube or I listen to podcasts. As much as I preach about audio and video, I was surprised by the answer. And no, I’m not saying blogging is dead. Sheesh. Watching and Listening are the New Reading People are reading on average a total of 19 minutes a day.

  • The Future is Giants Pretending to Be Small

Anheiser Busch In-Bev is a Dutch company that owns amongst other things Budweiser. Beer drinkers fall into two categories in general: those who love Bud and Coors and all those “lite” beers, and people who like craft beers. I’ll get back to that in a second. The most recent ad campaign on TV for Budweiser is pointing out as loudly as it can, “We brew this stuff in America!” T ...

  • How to Attract The Attention of Big Companies For Your Small Business

I’ve had a VERY fortunate career. I was ahead of the curve on a particular shift in technology that affected how businesses and people interacted. Because of this, I’ve spent time with a lot of the biggest companies in the world, often meeting their CEOs as well. The picture above is Bob Iger, CEO of Disney. I’ve met and spoken in front of Beth Comstock, vice chair of GE.

  • Seven to Ten Business Days

I just lost my pair of prescription glasses. Well, maybe “lost” isn’t the word. I know where they are. They fell off my parents’ bathroom sink right into the toilet exactly after I pushed the flush down. Whoosh. Gone. What happened next is what’s annoying. Buy Local, They Tell Me I called my eye doctor’s office and asked them to order up a replica of what I’d bought the last time.

  • How to Write a Great Round-Up Post

Three times today, I’ve been asked by a “blogger” to contribute to their amazing “round-up” post, where they query experts for their opinions on some topic that they feel matters to the people they try to entertain with their “writing.” In the last of these posts, I was addressed by my very secret title of {First Name}, indicating a very personal touch in how the person was seeking out help.

  • You’re Going to Have to Get Good at Video

I’ve been experimenting with making and editing video lately. I’m not doing it for my jollies or because I think I’m damned good looking (which I am). It’s because WE (humanity) has demonstrated loud and clear that we want to CONSUME video. We prefer it to text. And if that’s true, and you and I are in the business of communicating, we’re going to have to make video.

  • What My Son Teaches Me About Life

I asked my son Harold how he’d describe himself and he said, “I don’t know. There isn’t one word that describes me. I like gaming and stuff, and making music, and all that other stuff. There’s just not one word.” I can tell you what word he’d never use: autistic. Harold’s a very high functioning kid and the challenges of autism aren’t really his concern. He just works around them.

  • Have You Tried Videoblogging?

I blame Jacqueline for my recent re-fascination with videoblogging. Well, her and this research by Jay Baer. But wait. Video? Really? Video is..UGH! Video? Really? I know. I know! You’re too something. You’re boring or too fat or too skinny or too old or you have bad acne or whatever you have. I know. Where will you shoot? How do you do it? It’s too hard! Blogging’s easier. I know.

  • Chris Brogan at 47

I’m 47 today. The number is strange. It feels super old on the one hand and it still feels “before” on the other. I still feel like a kid. Not my energy. But in my ability to act like a grown-up. Or lack therein. I do NOT feel like I have it all under control. Chris Brogan at 47 My day yesterday was such a mix, but they all are. I edited a video to give people ideas on how to launch things.

  • Mastodon is Like The Early Days of Many Different Tech Things

I can’t believe that I’m about to say this: I just started using the new social network, Mastodon. I’m not saying YOU should use it, YET, but I can tell you that there’s quite a buzz about it. What is Mastodon It’s a social network, but a distributed one. Instead of us all showing up on a bunch of servers we think of as “Twitter,” we can sign up to a “home” “instance” of a se ...

  • A Business Trick No One Else is Teaching You

Mark’s a smart and driven guy, but he’s feeling a bit down. He feels like his big plans took a hit and that he’s probably past the point where he can do the role he dreamed of doing for so long. The only thing is, I don’t think Mark’s even 30 years old yet and he’s talking like an old man who has given up. I’ll explain how Mark can fix this at the very end.

  • What I Told the Bloggers at Social Media Marketing World

I wrote this 30,000 feet above the earth. No. I AM WRITING this 30,000 feet up. I just got back from going pee. While I washed my hands, I came up with the first line of my speech for tomorrow. What I Told the Bloggers at Social Media Marketing World If I’ve done it right, this post goes live about 15 minutes into my speech. I’m no Christopher Penn, so it’s likely I’ve done it wrong.

  • A Splintered Web Gets Even More Fragmented

This morning, after Jacq left for the gym, I spoke to two different bots on my phone. Poncho gave me the weather forecast and a little weird joke. Joy asked me how I was feeling because she wants to help me keep track of my mood and mental health. These are called chatbots and they’re part of one of the new splinters of what used to be called the web.
