Every year I believe things are going to begin leveling out, but every year the market dramatically changes – and 2015 was no different. The growth of mobile, the rise of product listing ads, the appears of new ad types all contributed to some significant changes in both consumers behavior and the associated spend by marketers.
At this very moment, a tug of war between Sales and Marketing threatens conversions, productivity and morale at many sales organizations — perhaps your own, even. Not sure this applies to you? Consider these questions for your organization: Who owns what part of the sales journey? What constitutes a qualified lead? What is the logical progression of a lead-turned-buye ...

When we moved our site over to Flywheel, we didn’t force everyone into an SSL connection (the https:// url that ensures a secure connection). We’re still undecided on this. We may ensure that form submissions and the ecommerce portion are secure, but not sure about just the average article to read. With that in mind, we realized that our canonical links were showing up both secure and insecure.
We were devastated a few years ago when our mobile app builder ended support for our mobile app. The app had over a thousand users. These subscribers that were engaged and spent a lot of time with the platform. While it had limitations, we were happy with the quality of the service and the user experience. The app eventually died and we couldn’t do anything about it. Until now.
A few years ago we were working with a company that had several million articles published on their site. The problem, of course, was that very few of them were read and even less actually ranked in search engines. We tested a pilot program where we applied 20% of their newsroom’s resources in improving and combining existing content.

Every time I log into Facebook it is clear that large consumer products companies are making good use of these tools. The question I am more interested in is whether small businesses jumping on the advertising bandwagon? That was one of topics we explored in t ...
Owning my agency has been an eye-opener into how business is done… and it’s not pretty. I don’t want this post to be an agency bashing post since I empathize with many agencies and the difficult decisions they have to make. When I first started, I was idealistic that I didn’t want to be that agency – one of those agencies that nickeled and dimed clients, pushed to upsell them ...

One of the slides that I discuss in virtually every conversation I have with businesses is one that I call the myth of attribution. In any system of measurement, we prefer boolean and discrete rules of behavior. If this, then that. It’s a problem, though, because that’s not how purchase decisions are made.
Few companies have the sales power to call on every prospect available. That means that it’s often left to chance or a gut feeling on which prospects that you should spend the most time with. More often than not, this spells disaster for companies. They spend time on prospects that will never convert while they may have leads that are hot and ready to do business.
One of our show favorites, Jay Baer, is back for another interview with what will be another best selling marketing book. In fact, I think this book goes beyond marketing and should impact the process and procedures of every business as it relates to customer service. When approaching content creation, there are literally HUNDREDS – even thousands – of tools out there to help the content marketer from topic ideation to process, to content development, optimization, promotion, and measurement. Each of these tools seemingly do some of the same things, but then they seem to beg the use of yet another tool.
It’s tough coming up with an analogy for the load put on a web server so here goes. Imagine you’re a web server and your visitors are cans of tomatoes. If you have one or two cans of food, you can carry them pretty easy. Pile a few hundred in your arms and none of the food can get where they need to be.

Why did you start your business? I’ll bet the farm that “because I wanted to be a marketer” wasn’t your answer. However, if you’re like the hundreds of small business owners I’ve worked with you probably realized about 30 seconds after you opened your doors that if you didn’t become a marketer, you weren’t going to be a small business owner for very long.

A key trend that we see right now on the web is the implementation of B2B and B2B2C via e-commerce. Even if your company has a sales team, the process of negotiation, proposal generation, and invoicing is all moving online. These methods used to connect to multiple systems, require manual intervention, and simply couldn’t be addressed by your standard ecommerce platform.
Once every month or so, we hear the same complaint from prospects who are working with inbound marketing agencies and clients that are working with us on their inbound marketing efforts. Not to mention that this complaint is one that I’d make myself with our agency if I didn’t understand how inbound marketing actually worked. Complaint: We’re not getting any business from our website.
Too many marketers are overly concerned with increasing traffic to their sites instead of converting the traffic they have. Visitors are arriving at your site each and every day. They know your products, they have budget, and they’re ready to buy… but you’re not enticing them with the offering they need to convert.
One of the first packages that I ever opened that was special was the first MacBookPro that I purchased. It felt like an unveiling as I opened the suitcase style box with the laptop and accessories beautifully fitted within. It was a major investment, and you could see the care Apple took to make sure that I knew it was special as I opened the box.
You just returned from a week in Vegas staffing another industry tradeshow. It’s easier to define multicultural marketing on what it’s not rather than what it is. Liz Miller discusses research published by the CMO Council and Geoscape, Activating the New American Mainstream states that the majority of customers look for multicultural stock photos and translation services… then pat themselves on the back that they’re done. That’s not multicultural marketing.

Before you read this post, you should know two things about me. I love watches and I’m an Apple fan. Unfortunately, my taste in watches doesn’t quite match the price tags on the works of art that I’d like to have on my wrist – so the Apple Watch was a must. I guess I’m not the only one who thinks so, though. According to NetBase, the Apple Watch beat Rolex in social mentions.
The great folks at Automattic have been closely integrating centralized WordPress management through their Jetpack plugin. I’ve already run into one issue with it, though, losing all of my past Jetpack analytics when my site somehow got disconnected and a staging site was connected instead. It was quite a bummer – and I’m thankful that I have Google Analytics also installed.
The email industry has two major problems with its continued use of mass mailings: Personalization – Sending the same message, at the same time, to all your email subscribers isn’t getting the right message to the right time to the right recipient. Why would Marianne, 24 years old, receive the very same offers as Michael, 57 years old, when they’re interested in very differ ...

Our recent post where we lamented about migrating our site to a new host got a lot of attention. No one wants to shift hosting companies… and especially someone like us that have 30 or so sites that we actively manage. As optimization experts, though, we didn’t have a choice. We could have every page optimized for search, promoted socially, and fine-tuned for engagement… but ...
