The conversation about local search is not a new one; marketers have been discussing the importance of targeting customers by location for the past decade. • Methbot, fake news and five other reasons SEM/SEO interest will surge

Based on what I’ve seen across my diverse set of clients, and talking to others in the industry, I’m predicting 2017 will be another great year for paid search. One of the reasons is a bit unusual: a flight to quality online media driven in part by “fake news,” “Methbot” and advertisers’ realization that they prefer not to have their advertising associated with those sites, d ...

  • Local search: It’s all about mobile

Optimizing for local search is important, but if you aren’t optimizing for mobile, you’re going to miss out on your most important source of local traffic. For years, Google has been improving the relevance of local search, from its “Pigeon Update” to Promoted Pins. And since there are more searches on mobile than desktop, it’s no wonder that Google has put a big emphasis on ...

  • The future of paid voice search and monetizing the map

Last year, Google introduced local search ads and promoted pins to wring a few extra dollars out of Maps. By extra, I mean potentially an additional $1.5 billion in 2017 alone. Maps inherently have local intent; local intent has a high likelihood for conversion. No surprises there. But ads run counter to a quality user experience.

  • Why content-led SEO will always fail to build links effectively

SEO as a discipline has always struggled with its black hat or unethical practitioners saturating the industry with questionable link-building practices. As an ethical SEO, I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling pleased about Google’s efforts to fight against these attempts to game the system with algorithm updates like Panda and Penguin, resulting in a wider awareness of the risk ...

  • How to nail a local SEO pitch

Local SEOs just get it. We understand that a company needs to be present when a customer digitally seeks its services. • It’s time to get ready for the holidays (Yes, really!)

We all know that the holidays are fast approaching. • 7 tips for small manufacturers thinking about using AdWords

In my 17 years as a B2B SEO and marketing consultant, I hadn’t really considered giving PPC a go until Google changed the layout for its search results to remove right-side ads on desktop and to increase the number of ads appearing above the organic results to as many as four. • Seasonal and holiday link building

Seasonal traffic trends have a tremendous impact on websites, and businesses need to take full advantage of the traffic spikes surrounding specific seasons and holidays — particularly those that are relevant to their products and services. • Keeping an eye (or three) on your AdWords competitors

We all love to know what our competitors are up to. We shouldn’t care that much — we should probably just get on with being the best. But we just can’t help ourselves. The best (and only empirical) source of competitor data is the AdWords Auctions Insights report. The only problem with this report is that it’s not easy to see changes over time, you can’t do any filtering, an ...

  • Missed link-building opportunities: Reclaiming broken links

It’s inevitable. Despite your best efforts to prevent them, there will likely be some 404 errors showing up on your website for old pages that have been discontinued on your site. If you’ve been working with one client or one site for a long time, you know it can be challenging to keep things fresh, both from an idea perspective and also an interest perspective. • AdWords Converted Clicks sunsets for good in March

It’s been months since Google first announced it would be deprecating “converted clicks” for “conversions” in AdWords. The metric is going away for good in March. As of September 2016, advertisers could no longer use “converted clicks” in bidding strategies. When March comes, any “converted clicks” columns will no longer show in AdWords reporting.

  • The impact (and lack thereof) of Google’s mobile popup algorithm

It’s not often that Google announces an algorithm update in advance. But when they do, not only can webmasters prepare for that update, we can also track its rollout once Google pulls the trigger. That provides a rare opportunity to gauge the impact of the algorithm update and determine what its effects are. That’s exactly what I’ve been doing since January 10, 2017.

  • Broken link building made easy

I see questions on forums every day from people asking how they can build links to their website. There are many ways to build links, but there’s one tactic in particular that I believe deserves a modern update: broken link building. Rather than declaring something dead or saying it doesn’t work, SEOs should be working on improving methods to be as efficient as possible.

  • New unconfirmed Google algorithm update touched down February 7th

Tuesday, February 7, 2017 there seems to have been a Google algorithm change that adjusted how many sites rank – both for good and bad. I’ve been tracking the update since the 8th and over time more and more webmasters and SEOs have been taking notice of the ranking changes at Google. This seems to be unrelated to the unconfirmed link algorithm change from earlier in February.

  • Has machine learning created a new model for SEO ranking?

The way Google ranks pages in its search results today is much different from the way it ranked them two years ago. Why? In early 2015, Google began its slow rollout of RankBrain, a machine-learning artificial intelligence system that helps process search results as part of Google’s ranking algorithm. As of June 2016, RankBrain is being used for all Google queries.
