The Wikimedia Foundation has clarified its search-related intentions today, saying it has no plans to build a search engine to crawl the web and compete with Google. Instead, as two foundation executives said in a blog post, the Knowledge Engine project is focused on improving search and discovery on Wikimedia projects.

A month or so ago, we reported on reports, somewhat confirmed by the founder of Wikipedia, that they are losing traffic in Google. Meaning, overall, they are seeing less traffic to their web site from Google organic search. This was initially based on a report from SimilarWeb and then a partial confirmation of some sorts from Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia.
